Fire in the data center: when water is not an option

Water and electricity don't combine well, even when we have to fight with fire in our data center and remain in operation or at least we want to have easy recovery. Fortunately, there are two most popular and available solutions on the data center market if we're talking about gaseous fire suppression applications: FM200 and Inergen. Who doesn't want to be sure that one's equipment and operations are save? Especially, when we realize that fire is one of the most critical incidents we may face in our data center and at the same time it's the risk we just have to consider. Of course, there are many other important risk factors, like floods, but today we want to focus of fire suppression.

Gain the control, use DCIM tools

We've been talking about DCIM (Data Center Infrastructure Management) type of software before, presenting Raritan dcTrack solution and describing the whole idea for the first time here. We now know, that such tools are crucial for all data center professionals, especially if they have to manage complex data centers. Of course in really small sites we can still believe in our spreadsheets, wikis or shared drives with hundreds of MS Visio layouts and AutoCAD designs and using DCIM solution can be considered as exaggeration. Unfortunately, when the scale of our site is serious we need professional software to support our daily work, give us a chance to manage all the assets, plan future changes, perform impact analysis, predictions and efficiently report all kind of requested data – from simple things, like discovering devices according to given criteria to much more complex capacity planning reports.

Certified IT Manager, CITM – exam passed

This is a lucky moment for me. I've been informed that I successfully passed an exam for CITM – Certified IT Manager certificate by EPI. The exam was conducted at the end of three day long, intensive course – quite a bit ironically on April 1, 2011. Additional challenge could be the fact, that both the course and exam was done 100% in English, although, I must agree with the fact that in reality this helped me a lot. Why? In many other cases Polish translations can be considered really poor or unclear, hence, even native speaker sometimes feel a little bit confused with the studying material and questions. Fortunately, in case of CITM this was not true and I had the pleasure to take part into training and then pass the exam without any doubts.

Hot aisle vs cold aisle containment battle

Nothing very fresh and new, as today we will have a chance to watch smart presentation from APC which shows their cooling technology – inRow systems – a part of InfraStruXure set of solutions. This material was made somewhere around 2008 by APC or at least it was published by user PowerProtProducts on YouTube. One would say: “that's old”. Anyway... Let's analyze it for a while.
